Mandolin player/vocalist (all parts) seeking band -SW USA

July 29th, 2010 by Rob

Mandolin player/vocalist (all parts) looking for a professional-minded band. I am located in the SW USA but will travel for the right band. Looking to play in the styles of The Stringdusters, David Grier, The Greencards, etc. I have been playing for over 30 years and have toured the US, Canada and Europe. I, too, am pro-minded and believe in utilizing every shred of technology that the 21st century has to offer…no old school marketing or image. You will not find a more dedicated band mate. I am also very sound-tech savy.

Check out my facebook HERE. My old band was Sawmill Road and you can see them (if the site is still up) HERE. Thanks! Mark

Mandolin Player Available - Pike County, KY

July 15th, 2010 by Rob

I am a mandolin player with over 13 years experience and I am looking to start a band. The ideal situation would be banjo bass and guitarist and hope to add fiddle or dobro as gigs and money increase. I have contacts for bookings but we will be tight before we play publicly. I am located in Pike County Kentucky and would prefer musicians from the surrounding states due to practicing. I do not want this to be “my” band but a democracy.

If this sounds like something you are interested in call Kenny at 606-754-3051 or

Randy Kohrs New CD - QUICKSAND

June 22nd, 2010 by Sherri

quicksand

2010 Rural Rhythm Records
Produced by Randy Kohrs
Recorded at Slack Key Studio, Nashville, TN

“Quicksand” is another first-class production from Randy Kohrs which includes some excellent accompaniment by artists including Scott Vestal, Mike Sumner, Clay Hess, Bryan Sutton, Tim Crouch, Adam Steffey, Russell Moore and many, many others. This CD includes a powerful mix of contemporary bluegrass, blues, country and gospel.

What stands out in this album are the powerful lyrics especially in the gospel-ish tunes ” If You Think Its Hot Here” and the title-track, “Quicksand”. If you are looking for a traditional-bluegrass CD this is not the album for you, however if you feel like jumping the fence this is just the album for you. With a line-up of pickers, vocalist and song variety this CD leaves you wanting more, so purchase it online or run down to the nearest store and join the rest of us in the “Quicksand.”

Buckaroo Bluegrass II - Riding Song

June 20th, 2010 by Sherri

buckaroobluegrassii

Artist: Michael Martin Murphey
Album: Buckaroo Blue Grass II - Riding Song
Produced by Michael Martin Murphey and Ryan Murphey

Not being a huge Michael Martin Murphey fan, I approached this album with a pre-opinion that I was wasn’t going to like it, after listening to a few tracks I realized that my opinion had been changed instantly and it has become one of my favorite albums. Although, I wouldn’t call this a strictly bluegrass album, if you like stories of the west, horses, cowboys and “Backslider’s Wine” you will enjoy this cd.

I used to always like to hear my Uncle Dale play and sing Michael Martin Murphey’s song “Wildfire” and to my surprise it is one of the songs featured on this cd but only with a more bluegrass style drive. Featuring MM Murphey and Carrie Hassler on vocals this has become my favorite songs on the album and with the addition of the banjo (Charlie Cushman), mandolin (Troy Engle), dobro (Rob Ickes) and fiddle (Troy Engle) it puts it into a genre I can relate to. Other great tunes from the album are “Blue Sky Riding Song” and “Desert Rat”.

Overall, If you are a Michael Martin Murphey fan you will not be disappointed one bit, also if you are not a fan and you are kind of timid about trying this one out I recommend that you jump behind the riens and give this one a ride.

“Life Goes On” First Single From Next MACC Festival CD

Nashville, TN – For the past ten years, the Musicians Against Childhood Cancer festival, commonly referred to as the MACC, has taken place just outside of Columbus, OH, and from year one, has attracted some of the biggest names in bluegrass and acoustic music. Festival promoter Darrel Adkins established the event, which draws more and more fans each year, as a charity benefiting St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, and has raised over $500,000.00 since its inception. While the MACC started out as strictly a bluegrass festival, it has since grown to include Americana and country music, and feature some of Nashville’s most renowned hit songwriters. To further promote the festival, the second MACC CD, entitled Life Goes On, containing mostly live performances from the festival from 2006 through 2009, will be released this year. The first single is the title track, as well as the only studio production, and is currently being offered as a free download through the MACC website, www.bluegrassclassic.com.

The first MACC project, Celebration of Life, was released in 2006 on Skaggs Family Records and subsequently won the International Bluegrass Music Association’s Album of the Year award. Life Goes On will bring back many of the artists heard on its predecessor, many of whom participate on the single, including Carl Jackson, Ronnie Bowman, Jerry Salley, Larry Cordle, and Ricky Wasson, who all sing a verse in the song. A nostalgic tribute to loved ones passed on, “Life Goes On,” written by Steve Thomas and Dale Pyatt, was recorded and mixed by Randy Kohrs at his Slack Key Studio in Nashville, TN, where Kohrs also shared in production duties and leant his instrumental and vocal talents. A full listing of artists and musicians heard on the single can also be found on the website.

An interview conducted by Kyle Cantrell is scheduled to air on Sirius/XM’s Bluegrass Junction station, where he chats with several of those involved, spins “Life Goes On”, and plays a few tracks from Celebration of Life, as well. While the interview aired initially on June 14th, 2010, it will be replayed on July 2nd, 2010 at 7:00am and Saturday, July 17th, 2010.
